Thirty-two-year-old Alice enjoys a middle-class marriage that others envy; her husband, Richard, is a high-ranking bank executive who provides a life of material comfort. Yet, their marriage is emotionally frigid; due to Richard’s physical issues, the relationship exists in name only, leaving Alice feeling trapped in a gilded cage. When Richard’s younger brother, Noah, arrives to spend the summer, a past romance resurfaces—the two had been lovers before Alice married Richard. Years ago, when Alice’s father fell critically ill, Richard had forced her into marriage by making the payment of medical expenses a condition, thereby tearing the couple apart.
